Patrick Jiang
Computer Science Ph.D. Candidate @ UIUC
Hello! I’m Patrick Jiang, a Ph.D. candidate in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, advised by Prof. Jiawei Han and Prof. Jimeng Sun. Previously, I received my B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from Waseda University in Japan.
I am an incoming Anthropic Fellow, and was a Student Researcher at Google Research.
My research lies at the intersection of language model agents, information retrieval, and reinforcement learning. I am particularly interested in how language models can learn to interact with external environments—such as search engines, tools, and structured knowledge sources—to acquire information, reason over evidence, and solve complex tasks more reliably. More broadly, I study how post-training and environment interaction shape the behavior, objectives, and reasoning processes of language models.
